Japanese Kanji Stroke Order Rules (筆順 / Hitsujun): Complete 8-Rule Guide & Exceptions
Why can fluent Japanese readers immediately guess the correct stroke order (筆順 / Hitsujun or 書き順 / Kakijun) of a Kanji they have never seen before? Because 98% of all 2,136 Jōyō Kanji follow 8 universal geometric rules standardized by Japan's Ministry of Education (MEXT) in the 'Hitsujun Shidō no Tebiki' (筆順指導の手びき). Once you internalize these 8 rules—and memorize the handful of famous exceptions like 右 vs 左 and 必—you will write balanced, legible characters and pass every handwriting recognition check effortlessly.

💡 Study Tips & Exam Strategy
- Memory trick for 右 (Right) vs 左 (Left): In 左 (Left), the bottom component is 工 (work, starts with a horizontal bar), so the whole character starts with a horizontal bar (一). In 右 (Right), the bottom component is 口 (mouth, starts with a vertical/downward stroke), so the whole character starts with the downward sweep (ノ)!
- Watch out for 3-sided left boxes like 区 and 医: write the top horizontal stroke first, fill the inside (メ or 矢), and finish with the L-shaped left-and-bottom corner stroke last.
- Always write bottom-left movement radicals (しんにょう 辶 in 道, 週, 達 and えんにょう 廴 in 建, 延) at the very end so the base supports the rest of the character.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why do 右 (Right) and 左 (Left) have different first strokes in Japanese?
Historically from ancient seal script and brush flow: 左 (Left) begins with the horizontal stroke (一) so the brush naturally flows from the diagonal sweep (ノ) into the horizontal top of 工. 右 (Right) begins with the downward-left sweep (ノ) so the second horizontal stroke (一) naturally transitions downward into the left vertical wall of 口.
What is the official Japanese stroke order for 必 (certain / Hitsuyō)?
In Japan's MEXT standard, 必 is NOT written as Heart (心) plus a slash. Instead: 1) Top center dot, 2) Long right-to-left diagonal sweep (ノ), 3) Center curving hook (ソ), 4) Far-left dot, and 5) Far-right dot.
